How Opt-In On The Website Texting Widget Works

📝 See the two ways leads submit through your LeadTruffle texting widget and what you can do with each lead next.

Overview

The website texting widget lets visitors on your site start a text conversation with your business instead of filling out a slow contact form. It captures a name and phone number, then hands the lead off to your AI to qualify and book them.

Leads can submit in two ways, and the experience differs depending on whether they check the SMS consent box. This article walks through both so you know exactly what your leads see — and what lands on your end in LeadTruffle.

Need to get the widget on your site first? See How to install LeadTruffle website widgets.

How the widget works

Every submission starts the same way. A visitor opens the widget and sees three fields: their name, their phone number, and an SMS consent checkbox.

What happens after they hit Send depends on that checkbox:

  • Box left unchecked → the lead sees a QR code and a Text Us Now button so they can start the text conversation themselves.
  • Box checked → LeadTruffle sends the lead an automated text right away, and your AI takes over the conversation.

LeadTruffle only sends an automated first text when the lead checks the consent box. This is what keeps you SMS-compliant — you're not texting anyone who hasn't opted in.

Option 1: submitting without checking the box

If the lead submits without checking the consent box, they haven't opted in to receive texts — so LeadTruffle can't message them first. Instead, the widget flips to a screen that lets the lead start the conversation on their own device.

From here the lead has two ways to reach you:

  • On their phone — they tap Text Us Now, which opens their messaging app with your business number already filled in.
  • On a computer — they scan the QR code with their phone to open the text, or click Text Us Now and pick which app should send the message.

The lead's name and phone number are still captured — they'll appear under the Contacts tab in LeadTruffle. But because they didn't opt in, no automated text goes out and no conversation is created in your Inbox. The QR code and Text Us Now button are what let the lead start that conversation on their own.

Tip: This path depends on the lead reaching out themselves, so the QR screen is designed to make texting you as fast as possible.

Option 2: submitting with the box checked

When the lead checks the consent box before submitting, they've opted in — so LeadTruffle sends them an automated text immediately.

The widget confirms the text went out, showing the lead which number to check for your message.

At the same time, your AI fires off the first message from your business number and the conversation is underway — no action needed from you. Because the lead opted in, they appear under the Contacts tab and an active conversation shows up in your Inbox.

What you can do next in LeadTruffle

Where a submission shows up depends on whether the lead checked the consent box:

Appears — AI starts the conversation

Every submission is captured under Contacts no matter what. A live conversation only lands in your Inbox when the lead checked the consent box (or, on the unchecked path, once they text you first).

When a conversation is in your Inbox, your AI handles it automatically.

From the conversation view you can:

  • Let the AI run — with AI Responses Active, the AI qualifies and replies on its own
  • See lead details — phone, email, address, and when the lead first contacted you
  • Set the pipeline status — every lead starts as New; move it through your pipeline as it progresses
  • Assign the lead — hand it to a specific team member
  • Add notes — keep context for your team on the conversation
  • Take over manually — toggle off the AI at the bottom of the conversation to reply yourself

Want to tailor your pipeline stages? See How to customize your lead statuses.

Summary

The website texting widget gives every visitor a fast way to start a text with your business:

  • Without the consent box checked, the lead texts you first via the QR code or Text Us Now button.
  • With the consent box checked, LeadTruffle texts the lead automatically and the AI takes over.

Either way, the lead is saved under your Contacts tab. A live conversation appears in your Inbox only when the box was checked (or once an unchecked lead texts you first) — and from there the AI responds, you can track status, and your team can jump in whenever needed.
